The role in one line: a field welder who is also a working member of the millwright installation crew. You'll handle structural and fabrication welding on conveyor systems, platforms, and automation equipment, and help install, rig, level, anchor, and align that equipment at customer facilities across North America, often inside live plants and during scheduled outages.
Position Overview
J+H Automation Solutions is looking for a skilled, safety-minded Millwright / Welder Installer to join our Field Installation Group. You'll work on-site at customer facilities, reporting to the Field Installation Team Lead, alongside experienced millwrights, welders, electricians, and controls personnel. Projects include conveyor systems, custom machinery, automation equipment, structural steel, and automated production lines for manufacturers in the HVAC, appliance, food & beverage, steel, and automotive industries.
Welding & Fabrication
Structural steel, conveyor supports, mezzanines, platforms, handrail, guarding, and equipment mounts, in all positions and in field conditions.
Millwright Installation
Setting, assembling, rigging, leveling, anchoring, and aligning conveyor and automation equipment with the crew.
Every J+H system is engineered, fabricated, and tested in our Hackett facility before it ships. Our field team's job is to install it right the first time. That takes someone who can read a print, set up in unfamiliar plant conditions, deliver clean, code-quality welds, and then pick up a level or a come-along and keep the install moving on a tight schedule.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform structural and fabrication welding in the field (SMAW, GMAW, and FCAW) on carbon steel, plus stainless steel as projects require
- Work as part of the millwright installation crew: mechanical installation, equipment assembly, rigging, leveling, anchoring, and alignment of conveyor systems and automation equipment
- Perform SMAW uphill/vertical welding and weld in multiple positions, including overhead and vertical
- Weld conveyor supports, stands, mezzanines, platforms, handrail, guarding, and equipment mounting to engineering drawings and specifications
- Read and interpret blueprints, field installation prints, and weld symbols
- Cut, fit, and prep steel with oxy-fuel and plasma torches, grinders, and hand and power tools
- Make field modifications and repairs when site conditions differ from drawings, and communicate changes to the Team Lead
- Obtain hot work permits and follow all OSHA, customer-specific, and J+H safety standards, including fire watch and housekeeping
- Set up, operate, and maintain portable and engine-driven welding equipment
- Inspect your own welds for quality and correct defects before sign-off
- Keep the work area clean and organized before, during, and after each project
Schedule & Travel
Required Skills
- Proficiency in SMAW (stick) and GMAW/FCAW (MIG/flux-core)
- SMAW uphill/vertical capability and the ability to weld in all positions, including overhead and vertical, in field conditions
- GTAW (TIG) experience is a plus but not required
- Hands-on mechanical installation, assembly, and rigging experience
- Experience reading blueprints, mechanical drawings, and weld symbols
- Skilled with oxy-fuel and plasma cutting, grinding, and fit-up
- Trained, or willing to train, on articulating lifts, scissor lifts, and forklifts
- Comfortable working at heights, in tight spaces, and in hot or noisy plant environments
- Team player who communicates clearly with crew leads and customer personnel
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED
- AWS D1.1 certification preferred, or ability to pass a J+H weld test
- Ability to pass a background check / MVR / drug test
- Valid driver's license
- Willing to travel
- Able to lift 50 lbs and work on your feet for extended periods
Experience
- Minimum 3 years of field or structural welding experience
- Millwright, conveyor, or industrial equipment installation experience preferred
